The Gediminas Tower is a major symbol of the city of Vilnius and of the nation itself.
Grand Duke Gediminas is supposed to have dreamt of an Iron Wolf howling at the top of the hill, which his priest interpreted as a prophecy of the great city that would one day appear. It is here Gediminas built the first wooden castle around 1300AD. The Tower itself is actually the remaining tower of the Upper Castle which was first built in brick in 1409.
